Switching Al Jazeera to Digital
Projecting & Implementing a Tapeless Infrastructure
Project Description: The project’s main challenge was creating a customised HD capable and tapeless studio infrastructure that would cover all requirements of a 24/7 live operation. The whole infrastructure is configured with one single codec, making transcoding completely unnecessary. Today, the tapeless ingest, editing and playout infrastructure covers 19 channels of Al Jazeera Sports.
Saeed O. Bawazir, Technology Division Director at Al Jazeera: “To implement a fully functional and fail-proof system of this size presented us with a major challenge. We then carefully examined a similar solution implemented by Wellen+Nöthen for live broadcasting of the UEFA EURO 2008, and quickly discovered its enormous potential. The digital workflows along the entire production chain now speed up our processes significantly and guarantee extreme flexibility.”
